Voters
group ready to ramp it up
A re-invigorated
Point Roberts Registered Voters Association board is ready
to go with a number of projects designed to increase the group’s
utility and visibility to voters on the Point. First up? A
candidates night for the upcoming election.
At its regular
monthly meeting on August 9, board member Mary Miller suggested
the association should concentrate on its historical role of
presenting a candidate’s night before elections
and pointed out that ballots will be sent out August 31 for
the September primary. The group intends to hand out voter
registration cards in front of the International Marketplace
before the registration deadline.
The board
also is intending to take a fresh look at the idea of incorporation
for Point Roberts. The subject came up in a recent meeting
held by state representative Doug Ericksen. “We
could run this town just by ticketing the Canadians speeding
down Tyee,” declared board member Mark Robbins, with
a laugh.
Housekeeping
issues appear to be a priority. Bank accounts, recordkeeping
and more need to be straightened out, according to board members. “That’s
the problem with all of the records. They’re not
in order but at least they’re all here,” said
Holly Malysh, the group’s secretary. President of
the association Campbell McClusky agreed with the need
for reorganizing, saying “It’s
like starting afresh, despite the fact that it’s
got a long history.”
The meeting
was the first since the annual meeting where board members
were confirmed in their position. The current configuration
of the board is: president, Campbell McClusky; vice-president,
Bev Griffiths; secretary, Holly Malysh; treasurer, Tiffany
Oakley and fellow board members Debbie Malcolm, Kevin Melsheimer,
Jim Marshall, Mary Miller and Mark Robbins.
The board
meets at 4:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month at
the community center on Gulf Road.
