Canada phasing out GST rebates

As part of a bundle of spending cuts announced by the Canadian government in September 2006, the GST visitor rebate program will be ending this year.

As of March 31, 2007 visitors will no longer be able to claim back the seven percent Goods and Services Tax (GST) they are charged on items purchased in Canada.

While receipts dated April 1, 2007 and later will not be eligible for the rebate, consumers will still have one year to file for the rebate.
To do so, they must continue to mail application forms, receipts and proof of export to the Summerside Tax Center.

For more information visit Summerside Tax Center’s website, www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tax/nonresidents/visitors/qa-e.html.
