2006
Parent Teacher Organization
By Elaine Komusi
2006 was a very busy year for the PTO once again dividing our
efforts between working with the school district to bridge the
gap between Point Roberts and Blaine, build trust and enrollment
for the Point Roberts campus and to have some good old fun activities
for the kids!
We kicked off the year with a brainstorming session.
We sure had our work cut out for us! Just to name a few of our
goals - Improve the image and visibility of the PR campus, better
utilize the campus, link the Blaine and PR campuses together,
improve the transition for kids going from PR to Blaine and finally,
better understand why some parents choose other schooling options.
The
next few months were very busy executing on all these ideas.
Produced a brochure to get information out about the local campus
and the activities.
Organized and funded a couple of field trips
for the PR kids to help familiarize them and feel connected to
Blaine before they ‘graduated’.
Kicked off the Homework
Center where kids of all ages could be supervised doing homework.
Lots
of fun activities – the Easter Egg Hunt, Field Day,
Bake Sale, graduation ceremonies, year-end party, Halloween party
and the winter concert.
Launched a community survey - a collaborative
effort with the BSD. This has provided us with confirmation about
some parents’ concerns
relating to sending their kids to Point Roberts and/or Blaine.
Meetings with the new district superintendent, Ron Spanjer.
We will continue to work on some of the key issues surrounding
Point Roberts families and schooling.
This new school year has
resulted in an increase in enrollment for the PR campus! We
are always looking for volunteers - whether you want to help
organize fun activities for the kids or get involved in community
based activities surrounding family and schooling.
