Summer
program needs kayak head
By Meg
Olson
While
the parks department summer kayak program is still short a
co-ordinator, the kids camp is ready to go with program alumnus
Andrew Grubb as the new leader.
“I’ve been working with the program long enough that
I have lots of experience with how it works,” said Grubb,
18, who has three years as a counselor with the program to his
credit and spent time as a camper.
Point Roberts Parks and Recreation District board member Shelley
Damewood said that while they were initially cautious about hiring
someone as young as Grubb, who graduates from high school this
summer, they were won over by the professionalism of his application
for the job. “I’m very, very impressed with Andrew,” she
said.
Grubb said he will draw on the format of previous programs mixing
sports and outdoor activities with creative hands-on projects.
His commitment to protecting the environment will also inject
an element of social responsibility and love of nature to the
program.
“I want it to be a good mix,” he said. “I really
want the kids to have an appreciation of the outdoors but also
have time for crafts,” he said.
The summer kids camp will run Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays
every week from July 9 to August 1. The program is open to kids
from 6 to 12 years old, and parents are encouraged to preregister
their children. Registration is scheduled for June 16 from 10
a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Gulf Road community center.
Damewood is still hopeful they can find a coordinator for the
kayak program, open to teens and adults. “Right now we
have no one to run the program and that’s a concern,” she
said. Anyone interested in the job can call Damewood at 945-6966.
