Lots of Indians but no chiefs

“I have the crew but I don’t have the leader,” said parks board member Shelley Damewood as the board got an early start on their summer program. “The kids who want to work for this year’s program are coming out of the woodwork. The problem is no one seems interested in taking the coordinator’s job.”

At their April 5 meeting the local parks board confirmed the summer children’s program will run Monday through Wednes-days this year from July 9 to August 1. The program, for children 6-12 has traditionally combined crafts, indoor and outdoor activities.

A kayak program popular with teens and adults is also planned for this year but faces a similar lack of leadership.

“A lot of our participants have great experience but I don’t know anybody who would take on that responsibility. Wesley Hubbard, who ran both programs last year, will not be returning to them in 2007,” Damewood said.
