PREP working to get juiced

As part of its efforts to coordinate response to a community-wide emergency in Point Roberts, the Point Roberts Emergency Preparedness group (PREP) is working to get generators in every potential shelter.
“PREP is donating, because we were donated, a 6,000 watt generator to be placed at the community center,” group co-chair Henry Rosenthal told the parks board at their April 5 meeting.

The board accepted the donation and adopted a motion to investigate the cost of appropriate housing for the unit and safely connecting it to the community center. “I want it to be up to code and safe under all conditions,” said board member Irene Waters.

Rosenthal said the unit, donated to PREP by Randal Quarry, would run for eight hours on one tank of gasoline and power the refrigerator, some lights and perhaps the heating system blowers. “You aren’t going to be able to turn everything on at one time,” he said, but it would be sufficient to keep local families dry, warm and safe if they couldn’t stay in their homes.

PREP is continuing to work on three shelter locations in Point Roberts. “This gives us three generators now: one here, one at the church and hopefully a bigger one in the fire hall,” Rosenthal said.
The group meets monthly at the community center, with their next meeting on May 1 at 7:30 p.m.
