Local
conservation group formed
A newly formed local non-profit group will join the Whatcom
Land Trust raising funds to buy a 90-acre chunk of Lily Point,
and hopes to go further.
“Our initial goal is to make that 90-acres happen,” said
Point Roberts Conservation Society member Michael Rosser. “Then
we’ll be working on the remaining 45 acres to the north.” Rosser
said.
The group wants to see Lily Point Park extend from Claire
Lane along the shoreline to Cedar Point Avenue, which will allow
for more shoreline protection, better public access and more
recreational opportunities. “That is where a gorge leading
to the beach makes shoreline access possible at the northern
end of the proposed park. Visitors to the new park will be able
to walk on the beach and stroll through the forest in an easy
two-hour loop,” Rosser
said.
The group has an anonymous donor willing to match community
contributions. “The
first $50,000 we raise will be doubled,” Rosser said.
Donations
can be sent to Point Roberts Conservation Society, P.O. BOX
158 Point Roberts, 98281, or potential donors can call Rosser
at 604/813-7515.
