LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

The Editor:
Just when I think Old George couldn’t possibly out-dumb himself he reaches into the depths of his mutant gene pool and scrapes up Michael Chertoff and makes him Head of Hopeless Insecurity. Michael would better represent his abilities if he changed the first half of his surname to Jerk. Having kids yanked off buses and read the riot act – what’s next – sending Navy Seals after preschoolers?

I always prided myself on never making the same mistake twice, but I have to admit I voted for George two times – probably because he reminded me of Alfie E. Newman of Mad magazine.
In all seriousness, folks, if you don’t see the parallels to Nazism you’d better open your eyes and demand your elected representatives restore your constitutional and civil rights and tell them to put the Patriot Act where the sun don’t shine. Don’t let anybody ever tell you they’re taking away your rights for your protection. That’s bovine scatology at its best – just like a cop saying “I’m going to handcuff you for both our protection.” My answer would be “Then handcuff yourself and keep this even.” Or if in Canada, say “Don’t taze me, bro.”

These leaders are so out of control it’s scary. We only have one year left of this lunacy and we’d better elect someone who can remake this country to what the founders created and many fought for, died for, and are still fighting and dying for before we allow them to make this the People’s Republic of the United States with Grand Fuhrer George and his jack-booted band of mental midgets running amok, all in the name of fighting evil-doers.

With all these new regulations for border crossing from one “free” country to another “free” country one would have to wonder if George paid for a minister’s pass to enter Canada. Didn’t he have a drunk driving conviction? Maybe the exalted ones are treated differently in these lands of equality. Just a few thoughts from someone recalling the old days when America was truly the land of the free.

The Editor:
The attached letter was in our mailbox the last week of January. We are questioning why this U.S. postal regulation is being enforced at this time by the postmaster of Point Roberts.

In the almost 18 years we have owned property in Point Roberts this has never been an  issue, nor have we ever heard of it. We collect our mail on a weekly basis all year long. We feel this three-day time limit is totally unreasonable. We have never had a problem with our mailbox or mail service. In our opinion, as the mailbox belongs to us, once the mail is placed within it, it now becomes our property and responsibility. Is it not a federal offense to remove mail from a private mailbox?

If this regulation is enforced, the line ups at the post office wicket, which are already lengthy, will only increase. Not to mention the increase in border traffic for those who will have to come down twice a week to pick up their mail. Also, why should we be forced to purchase private mailboxes or use  a commercial mailer when we already have paid the U.S. Postal Service by purchasing stamps for delivery of mail to our  mailbox? It is doubtful there are enough of these boxes for those who will be forced to use such a service.

Lastly, as this is a United States postal regulation, is it being enforced throughout the state of Washington or just Point Roberts?

The Editor:
A note of thanks goes out to two local businesses for their support of a fundraiser for the Blaine high school after grad party, class of 2008.

The parents organized a lasagna dinner and auction in January. Kitty Doyle, owner of the Blue Heron Gallery donated an item for a goodie basket and Kyle German, manager of the Point Roberts Golf and Country Club donated a certificate for a free round of golf.

Thank you both so much for supporting our senior high school students!

The Editor:
Interested individuals and representatives of various groups and organizations met at the community center on January 18 to discuss the pros and cons of a proposed community council.
Those attending agreed that a provisional entity could initiate meetings, perhaps on a monthly basis. The sessions would be open to representatives from any and all groups and organizations active here at the Point as well as interested individuals. The next meeting will be March 7 at 3 p.m. at the community center. It was agreed that the first order of business would be to discuss and possibly determine by-laws for this interim organization.
Attending the January meeting were the following: Arthur Reber, Rhiannon Allen, Jud Meraw, Bev Griffith, Mark Robbins, Campbell McClusky, Roberto Angotti and Henry Rosenthal.
Some of the points made at the meeting included: a) the need to have the widest organizational representation feasible and to possibly speak for the broadest spectrum of Point Roberts residents and owners; b) the need for a collective council for the widest possible awareness here at the Point of concerns and problems surfacing through the various groups; c) the desirability of reaching beyond the Point to government (county, state, federal) with a united voice on such problems.

Again, if individuals and organizations feel that a combined united voice would improve our community, we look forward to the next meeting at the community center on March 7 at 3 p.m.

The Editor:
On behalf of my wife Helena and myself, we want to thank the community during this difficult time.

To the many people who have contributed to Helena's medical care costs, we thank you. You are all unbelievable. Helena is a wonderful person who is so caring and it's incredible how everyone has so generously responded.
Love to all.
