Septic rules still up in the air

Whatcom County Council members and the county health department continue to grapple with how to make state requirements for septic inspections a good balance between protection for the environment and burden on homeowners.
As the All Point Bulletin was going to press February 28 the county board of health met to review how other counties are implementing the state mandated inspection system and look at some alternatives to an earlier council mandate for professional inspections only.

Under consideration are homeowner inspections balanced with professional inspections at longer intervals, what kind of training homeowners would need and how much septic experience versus training licensed inspectors would need to have.
