2009 was a successful year for the Dollars for Scholars. Steve O’Neill was elected president and Wes Hubbard, Darlene Perritt, Ingrida Grossman, Jim Linde and Alex Grubb, (student liaison), joined the board of directors.

We awarded scholarships to Hal Furno, Steve Furno, Mary Gleason, Andrew Grubb, Alex Grubb, Shelby Hebert, Conor O’Neill, Kaitlin O’Neill, Naomi Shucard, and Nick Van Buskirk. 

Our fundraisers included a car wash with the fire department and the kids, ($959), the Marina Seafood Festival, ($417), and the Christmas Craft Fair, ($468).

These are all names and numbers, important to be sure, but there is another element. We think 2009 was a successful year because of the ever-increasing community support. Every year there are more donations. In nine years the Dollars for Scholars has awarded more than $99,000 in scholarships. Amazing! We are a small community with a small number of businesses and yet people believe, as we do, that it’s important to encourage our local young people to seek higher education. We are grateful for the generous support and are looking forward to our tenth year.
