Look for some hot fishing in August

By Mikael R. Kenoyer

There will be no shortage of opportunity for competitive fishermen this August. Between the ILWU Local 500 Annual Fishing Derby and the Point Roberts Salmon Derby, they should have plenty to keep them busy.

The ILWU derby, August 3 and 4, will have two weigh-in stations - at Sewell’s Marina in Vancouver, and at the Point Roberts Marina. Weigh-in times begin at 8 a.m. both days, and end at 5 p.m. August 3 and at 3 p.m. on August 4. While entry is not necessary for the first prize, a one week Alaskan cruise for two, plenty more prizes are up for grabs for the biggest salmon, and for hidden weights. Proceeds go to local charities. Tickets are $10 CDN.

The Point Roberts derby, August 10 and 11, is offering $500 for the biggest fish, and other prizes. The $40 CDN, $25 US entry fee includes a 7 p.m. barbecue at the Dockside Café August 10. Weigh-in will be at 5 p.m. August 11 at the Point Roberts Gas Dock. Prizes will be awarded upstairs in the banquet room. For more information and tickets, call Dave Gellatly at the Point Roberts Marina, 945-2255, or Scott at Bay Industrial, 604/943-8518.
