Slowly but surely, the Point Roberts skatepark is getting close and closer to being a done thing. The site has been cleared and the cement pad is expected to be poured in September.

Roberts Parks and Recreation District is the lead organization for the project and has contributed the property as well as a cash donation to the project up to $25,000.

The Point Roberts Skatepark Committee, a local action group organized for the purpose of developing a skatepark facility for our local youth, was spearheaded by Helena and Mark Furno and Terrie LaPorte. Their group efforts were able to raise approximately $1,200 and was used initially to cover the cost of the necessary Whatcom County permit process.

Approximately a year ago, a presentation was made to representatives of Rotary International of Tsawwassen, B.C. who have been looking for an appropriate project that would provide the youth of our community a needed recreational outlet for their use and enjoyment. Their resulting interest in our project is leading to a generous donation from their organization. They have pledged the first ramp, the center pyramid. Other local parties and organizations have expressed an interest in donating to the project as well. We look forward to their assistance.

The status of the construction phase of the project is that the parks-donated property directly east of the Benson Road firehall has been cleared. The next step will be the laying of a 75 x 100 foot cement slab that will serve as the skatepark surface.

We are actively seeking contributions for specific components of the project. In next month’s issue of the All Point Bulletin, we will detail the cost for various ramps, rails, a half pipe and launches for the skatepark. Confirmation of pricing on the various pieces is forthcoming. Individuals and groups will be able to donate for specific features or just give an unspecified contribution.

It should be noted that historically, successful skatepark operations have included the direct participation of the skateboarders themselves offering them an opportunity to participate in the operation of their facility while developing firsthand a sense of responsibility.

Our local Whatcom County deputy sheriff, Rich Emmons, has also been involved in the project since inception and believes the Benson Road site is excellent offering easy access for the performance of their normal patrolling.
