2004 IN Review
Point Roberts Senior Center
By Armene Belless
2004 was a historic year for our senior center. We added another day of operation on Friday, June 4! For over 25 years the center was open on Wednesdays but over the last few years our membership more than doubled. Our Friday activities and luncheons have been quite successful.
Our computer classes continue to be quite popular. Due to the generosity of Whidbey Telecom, we have had DSL for our six computers this past year. We will be starting another six-week computer class (for only $15!) on Wednesday, January 19. We offer instruction for Word and internet/e-mail. Whether you are a beginner or want to expand your abilities, we have several learning options. Doug Ritchie has been our volunteer teacher for several years. Class times are at 10 & 11 a.m.
Last year’s activities included: Crazy hat day, joke day, the hobby fair, salmon BBQ at Lighthouse Park, all-county bocce ball tournament in Lynden, pool tournaments, Mexican train dominoes, bridge, holiday parties, reflexology classes, beanbag baseball, cards, digital camera classes, bocce in the backyard and much more. For our big fundraiser in August we baked over 100 pies (mostly blackberry and strawberry-rhubarb).
Our AARP Safe Driving Class (for people over 50 who want a discount on their car insurance) is held in September and continues to be quite successful. Our flu shot clinic in October was only able to give shots to people age 65 and over, and those who are medically at risk. However, everyone in these categories who came in received a shot.
Whether you are a full or part-time resident or just visiting, you are always welcome at our senior center.
Keep an eye on our Seniors Point column in every edition of the APB for current classes, activities and lunch menus. See you at the center!
