Point Roberts Parks & Recreation District
By Linda Hughes
Your parks and recreation board is very proud of the accomplishments of the past year, and we must begin our look back at this great year with abundant and sincere thanks to community members who gave of their time, expertise and generous nature throughout. Heidi and Tor Baxter, together with a team of Kids Kamp teachers Heather Good, Neal Teutsch, Christina Hammer, Andrew Grubb, and Casey Hubbard provided summer activities for children and teens. We thank all of you for sharing your talents and time with the kids.
At the community center we constructed a new bocce ball court and installed new sprinklers to keep the lawn and playing surface green and cool all summer long. The center hosted a Healthy Living Fair, a permanent May Pole was installed, and the seniors group added a second day to their program with additional financial support from the parks district. The community center is frequently used for meetings, celebrations and gathering. If you would like to hold a function at the center, please call 945-5424 for booking information.
This year we purchased kayaks for use by the teen summer program. The parks district intends to offer kayak lessons, which will be mandatory for community members wishing to utilize this newly acquired equipment.
We broke ground for the skate park at Baker Field, and have now laid the slab and added large bumpers and skate accessories to it. Kids are already using it and we hope you safely enjoy having a skate park added to your community! We are looking into the possibility of adding a webcam, so that parents can check in on their skaters now and again. Last but not least, we have added Doggie-Do clean up bags at the community center and Baker Field area to help keep our parks clean.
Thanks to all our guests who brought ideas, questions and concerns to our meetings. Your input is valued and we look forward to seeing you next year!
