Smiles and applause greeted the students at the 10th annual Award’s Night on June 4. Seven high school graduates were awarded $1000 scholarships for postsecondary education. Dollars for Scholars board members presented awards to Madison Ellis, Alexandra Grubb, Rhachael Lopez, Destiny Massey, Carol Robertson, Hannah Shucard and Haley White. Students that are continuing college students were each awarded $500 scholarships. Board members presented the scholarships to Cameron Ellis, Steven Furno, Andrew Grubb, Conor O’Neill, Kaitlyn O’Neill and Naomi Shucard.
Steve O’Neill, Dollars for Scholars president, spoke about the generous support our community has given to the students and our gratitude for their generosity. This was followed by seven special awards: Ingrida Grossman presented the Don Wilson Award, given by Minda Eadie-Wilson in memory of her husband, to Alexandra Grubb, the All Point Bulletin award was presented to Hannah Shucard by Pat Grubb, Victoria Robertson awarded the Sterling Savings Bank award to Haley White, Joan Linde awarded the Downtown Wackie Walkers Award to Carol Robertson, and Steve O’Neill awarded the International Marketplace Award to Rhachael Lopez.
The awards committee had earlier suggested the creation of a new award, the Well-Rounded Student award which was presented to Andrew Grubb.
Each of the special scholarships were $500. The last award of the night, however, was $1,000. It has only been awarded once before and was given to a student who soared above other students, thus giving the scholarship its name, the Eagle. In 2003 the Eagle was awarded to Wes Hubbard. The awards committee all thought it was fitting to have Wes, now a member of the Dollars for Scholars board, present the Eagle this year. He presented it to Naomi Shucard who is attending two universities, carrying three different majors and boasting a transcript covered with As! She is an amazing example of an outstanding student.
The10th annual Award’s Night awarded $14,000 in scholarships, bringing the total amount of scholarships awarded to $113,338.50. We are proud of our students and proud of the community that supports them. Good show!
