When deputy Glen Slick was first posted to Point Roberts he was “the new guy” with only two years on patrol with the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office. Thirteen years later he’s volunteered to come back and his priorities in keeping the community safe haven’t changed much.

When the All Point Bulletin interviewed Slick in February 1997 he said he “did notice they go pretty fast” on Point Roberts streets, and he was concerned about the safety of pedestrians, bikes and horses that also use Point Roberts roads.

Back on the Point, Slick is frequently seen prominently parked at the intersection of Tyee Drive and Benson Road or other high traffic areas. “I’m sitting there, a visual warning, just being present,” he said. He is hoping a combination of that presence and warnings with the occasional ticket will get motorists to slow down and stop at stop signs.

After conversations with local residents and business owners, Slick said traffic safety issues appeared to be a primary concern, along with familiar issues like garbage dumping and burglaries of unoccupied cabins.
Slick spent eight of the years since he left the Point as a detective with the Northwest Regional Drug Task Force and he brings that experience with smuggling issues to the area, already getting heightened attention from the border patrol.

Having returned to patrol duties and with a young family Slick said the Point seemed like the right place to be, and he and his family are looking forward to enjoying the beaches and exploring the lower mainland in his time off. “This is a great place for little guys,” he said.
