This year’s Ron Nielson Fall Golf Classic is going to be all about the fun, according to co-organizer Bill Steele. “We want it to be a real community event,” he says, pointing out “and there will be prizes for all skill levels of play!” First prize in this year’s event is a week’s stay at a condo at a private residence club in Whistler, B.C.
When Bill Steele goes looking for corporate sponsorships, he marvels at the responses he receives from so many who remember Ron Nielson and the impact he had on them. The extensive sponsorship from businesses in Point Roberts and Delta is a testament to the impact that Ron Nielson had on our adjoining communities, says Steele, including his being a driving force behind the creation of the Point Roberts golf course.
Funds raised at the event are gifted to the Point Roberts Wellness Clinic in accordance with the wishes of the Nielson family. The clinic serves residents and visitors to Point Roberts. Last year $3,500 was donated and was used to purchase several pieces of necessary equipment, including a urine analyzer, a special attachment to current equipment enabling the clinic to perform diabetic tests, and a much needed computer.
Virginia Lester, ARNP, said the donation “was really wonderful for us and we really appreciated it.” She added, “There’s a limit to the funds available through taxation and some equipment we now have and would like to have are simply not in the budget.”
The Classic will be held Friday, October 1 at the Point Roberts Golf and Country Club. Participation in the tournament will be limited to 40 two-person teams. Registration forms are available at Nielson’s Building Center and the Point Roberts Golf and Country Club.
Further details will be posted on the club’s website as they become available. Their website is www.pointrobertsgolfcourse.com.
