The highlight of the year for the Historical Society was the open house in honor of Judy Ross who gifted 18 wall quilts to the society. These one-of-a-kind works of art depict the “Abandoned Houses of Point Roberts” and are on permanent display in the back room at the Community Center. Stop by on Wednesdays and/or Fridays when the room is open and enjoy not only the art quilts and display cases but also our collection of photographs.
One of our projects this year was to take on the responsibility of maintaining the gardens on the north side of the building in appreciation of the Point Roberts parks board for allowing us the space in the community center.
We added a new permanent sign in front of the antique Iron Chink (cannery equipment) in the back yard. We also arranged two display cases inside the building. The back room display features WWII memorabilia to mark the 70th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor and the front display is filled with holiday collectibles both old and new.
We have been collecting stories from people telling about their lives on Point Roberts. So far there are more than 50 stories that will be available to the public in the library sometime next year. Please contact Kitty Doyle at the Blue Heron Gallery to share your story.
Plans are being made to hold a Point Roberts school reunion in June to include all schoolchildren, past and present, and those attending local schools in the area.
Our next meeting will be the annual general meeting on February 29 at 7 p.m. and will feature a guest speaker. All are welcome to attend.
