This year’s Annual General Meeting of the Point Roberts Taxpayers Association (PRTA) in July proved to be a big success, attracting greater attendance and participation. We would like to believe that this was a reflection of the association’s active involvement in the community and the presence of our county tax assessor as keynote speaker. Or, the Brewster’s Fine Food and Spirits venue may have had something to do with it. Whatever the motivation, local taxpayers gathered to engage in lively discussion of community improvement and tax issues, and several new members volunteered to serve on the board of directors.

We welcomed the news this year of the county’s success in securing grant funding to finally restore the pier at Lighthouse Marine Park. Maintaining and improving this key economic and recreational asset continues to be a high priority of the association, including the construction of a lighthouse and whale-watching platform facility in the park.

The PRTA endorsed the park district’s request for a new six-year tax levy and is eager to see the implementation of needed repairs and improvements to the community center.

As one of the represented organizations, PRTA continued to support the work of the Point Roberts Community Advisory Committee in officially representing Point Roberts in county government matters.

We were also invited by the port director to be represented on a committee to discuss border issues, to help convey issues, concerns and information between the public and CBP.

The new board of directors has made the promotion of economic opportunity and jobs its top priority going forward. This year, we will seek to meet with key business leaders and Port of Bellingham commissioners to advance this cause.

Twice during the past year, PRTA fulfilled its commitment (along with partner sponsor Kelly & Son Roofers) to collect litter along Gulf Road under the Whatcom County Adopt-a-Road program.

It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing this year of long-standing PRTA member and past director Knick Pyles whose commitment and enthusiasm for community improvement was an inspiration to all.

The taxpayers meet on the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the community center, and we welcome everyone to join in discussing matters of concern to the Point Roberts community.
