Thanks to a recent Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) decision NW Sky Ferry will offer more flexibility and lower prices for its service to Point Roberts.
On November 18, 2011, the FAA granted authority for NW Sky Ferry to list Point Roberts as a “regular airport for scheduled operations,” where previously the company could only serve the Point as an “on demand carrier.”
“Now we can combine people on the flight where before we couldn’t,” company owner Skip Jansen said. “Before if there were two different reservations we couldn’t put them on the same plane. I can remember one guy boarding to fly to Point Roberts while another guy was waiting in the terminal for that plane to turn around and come back for him.”
Jansen said they could now offer “flightpooling,” in which passengers can get a seat to Bellingham for $69 each way if four or more passengers are flying. Flights are booked through NW Sky Ferry, which works to find a time amenable to all passengers.
“The real beauty of flightpooling is that the customers have the flexibility of setting their own schedule and paying a competitive seat fare,” Jansen said.
NW Sky Ferry has been serving Point Roberts as a charter service since February 2010, flying to the Point two or three times a week. “We’re hoping that will increase,” he said. “The more people can get together, the more economical it will be.”
Based in Bellingham, NW Sky Ferry specializes in flights between Bellingham, the San Juan Islands and Canada, as well as most other locations in the Northwest.
