Boaters weaving across the border during a day on the water are being warned the rules for crossing the border are different for U.S. and Canadian authorities.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection only requires boaters to report in if, after leaving a U.S. port, they touch land or contact another vessel while they are in Canadian waters.

Canadian authorities, on the other hand, require telephone reporting for boats as they enter Canadian waters or begin “weaving in and out of Canadian waters.”

Cell phone users can call 888/226-7277. Boaters who either land, don’t have cell phones, take on people or goods, or are carrying non-U.S. or Canadian citizens must report to a designated marine reporting site. Check respective websites for information.
