Point Roberts Radio is up and running, a volunteer run non-profit internet radio station that aims to broadcast a mix of local issue commentary and entertainment.
“There aren’t many community internet radio stations so we’re sort of feeling our way,” said Jennifer Urquhart, one of the four board members at the new radio station. She said they were grateful for expert assistance from several volunteers with radio experience and were reaching out to the community for ideas or content.
The inaugural programming begins the day with Good Morning, Point Roberts from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., featuring a local event or discussion. On Tuesday, July 24 they aired a live eagle tour with Jeff Butts, and they have featured a conversation about parks programs with parks district commissioner Linda Hughes. “Right now that’s the only Point Roberts live show,” Urquhart said.
“Otherwise we’re picking up shows from other resources.”
Urquhart said they were excited to be offering Wireless Theater from London, which has performances for both children and adults.
The remainder of the day features jazz programming. “It’s our orientation temporarily,” Urquhart said, due to the availability of the material through one of the station volunteers.
“Our goal is to have 80 percent of our program local or from this region,” she said. “We want to pull the community together and create a forum for education, conversation and entertainment.”
The station will be run as a non-profit, with no advertising, and will depend on donations and sponsorships. Urquhart said they hope to eventually create a paid station manager’s position. The initial fundraising goal is $5,000 for equipment and startup expenses.
