A care home in Point Roberts? An idea whose time has come

Posted

Victor Hugo, French poet and novelist penned the statement, “Nothing else in the world is more powerful than an idea whose time has come” and Circle of Care’s (CoC) board of trustees agree. The need to build a small care home for elderly residents here in Point Roberts was confirmed in the results of an online survey the board conducted in 2021.

The why is obvious; with a median age of 58 years old, the Point is disproportionately populated with a rapidly aging community of elders who all stated in the survey that they would prefer to live on the Point until they die. The with whom is also obvious, at least to the board, which is working with a non-profit organization, The Green House Project, that has built over 370 small care homes in the U.S. over the last 17 years.

But how? When? Where?

The board hopes that the community will answer these questions during an ongoing series of town hall meetings along with the efforts of a steering committee driving a 501(c)3 organization. The steering committee is currently organizing itself after an initial meeting held on May 24 where interested individuals listened, learned and pelted the board with questions.

The first town hall meeting will occur on Sunday, June 5 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the fire hall training room at 2030 Benson Road. In attendance to inform our community and to answer your questions will be Susan Ryan, senior director of The Green House Project, who is making a special detour from a conference in Whistler to meet our community and offer expertise and guidance on this timely project.

Please put this important meeting on your calendar and plan to attend this one as well as each of the subsequent meetings. Why? Well, eventually this project will be important to you. Whether personally or for your parents, all of us will hopefully live long enough to have a need for this important asset to our community.

The Circle of Care bus will provide transportation for those who would like to attend but who need a ride.  Leave a message on 360/945-5222 with your name, phone number and address to reserve a spot.
