As the Christmas season and the Festival of Lights enters our homes, we reignite the fires of our traditions in our hearts. We sing carols and songs long familiar, while learning a few new ones, and the warmth of our hearts and hope for a time of peace and hope surround us.

Whether we are healthy or not, young or old, in the midst of loss or new life, we are lifted up by thoughts of the courage and strength of family; we are lifted up by the story of Mary and Joseph welcoming Jesus into their lives – their home – and the story of shepherds, angels and wise men coming from a distance to welcome him. For many, there is the wish to be home or actual return “home” to those who are beloved.

In the midst of WWII in 1943, “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” was written by Gannon and Kent and can take us back to that time of yearning for the safety and love and better memories of home.

But we’d like you to ponder a different understanding – the return of the Christ into our hearts and homes, not just as an infant from 2000 years ago, but the current Christ – a force for good, for hope of reconciliation, for a place where everyone is valued whatever their gifts or differences, where we let go of the old hurts and slights and where the love light gleams.

And where those who are homeless can find a time of shelter, and we provide that with a smile, a kind word, a softening of heart and a new ability to relate and to lighten the loads of their isolation, fear, loneliness and poor-ness of spirit, of safety, of love, of warm and clean clothes.

And in doing so, we welcome Christ home; we can say, things have improved some, Lord, come home now, we’re ready ... not just in our dreams but here and now.

This year’s concert by our Trinity Community Choir is called “I’ll Be Home for Christmas.” For some of us, that is what we are hoping that Jesus is saying to us – that he is going to show up for us, be with us now, in every way we can receive him – perhaps as a visitor in our midst, perhaps as a long lost friend or perhaps on the street begging. Join us, by lighting the flame in your own heart and letting that light and love shine in our world.
