Church News March 2016

Easter takes place in March this year and there are several special services at Trinity Lutheran Church.

Palm Sunday will take place on March 20 at 11 a.m. It celebrates the triumphal return of Jesus to Jerusalem and will include a procession.

Maundy Thursday falls on March 24. This is the commemoration of the Last Supper.  It is followed on March 25 with Good Friday, the day of the crucifixion.

Services for all three of these pre-Easter observations will be held at 11 a.m. with Pastor Jean Barrington presiding.  Easter Sunday is on March 27 this year. Father Chuck Cannon will preside over the celebration of the resurrection. Childcare is available on Sunday mornings.

We have recently begun a monthly gathering every third Saturday evening. February’s event featured the music of Glenn Frey and the Eagles. About 35 people attended the program led by Fred Culbert. It included big screen video of performances by the Eagles and Glenn.

After a discussion of the meaning of the lyrics, Craig Jacks spoke about the influence Glenn had on his career in music and led everyone in singing three of the Eagles’ biggest hits.

Many of those attending asked when the next event would take place. I am happy to let you know that currently two more such evenings are in the planning stages, one featuring the music of Leonard Cohen from his “Live in London” concert and another featuring John Denver’s “Wildlife Concert.”

These will probably take place in March and April, so watch for announcements in the All Point Bulletin e-news.

The second Saturday Youth Philosopher’s Café continues and is being greatly enjoyed. It begins at 6:30 p.m. with live music and is open to all between the ages of 15 and 20.

Those attending are encouraged to set discussion topics for the evening. People are also encouraged to share their own music. There are refreshments and a 1960s coffeehouse vibe. Newcomers are always welcome.

As days grow longer and the trees leaf out and flowers begin to bloom, take a moment to acknowledge gratitude for our beautiful home surrounded by the waters of the Salish Sea. Make a new friend, reconnect with an old one and perform random acts of kindness.

As the unity poet James Dillet Freeman once wrote, “For above all, love is a sharing. Love is a power. Love is a change that takes place in our own heart. Sometimes it may change others, but always it changes us.”
