Day 505: Point Roberts border opens up for U.S. citizens and permanent residents

Posted

Point Roberts residents, regardless of vaccination status, will be able to enter the adjoining communities of Tsawwassen and Ladner for non-essential reasons beginning at 9 p.m. on Sunday, August 8.

U.S. citizens and permanent residents in Point Roberts, regardless of vaccination status can enter Canada “to carry out everyday functions and access goods and services” as long as they stay within those communities, according to an August 5 Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announcement.

The Canadian border will open to fully vaccinated U.S. travelers across the entire U.S./Canada border at Pacific time on Sunday, August 8. Travelers will need to present proof of a negative Covid-19 test taken within 72 hours of their arrival and abide by other entry restrictions.

Sunday will mark 505 days since the U.S., Canada and Mexico agreed to close the border to non-essential travel in March 2020. The U.S. has yet to reciprocate Canada’s relaxation of the border closure. Canadian and other travelers will not be allowed to enter the U.S via land port of entries before August 21 at least, offering no respite to beleaguered businesses in Point Roberts.

U.S. travelers entering Canada by boat must announce their arrival intentions using ArriveCAN, unless the boat doesn’t dock, according to the CBSA release.

Travelers will need to use the most recent version of the ArriveCAN app scheduled to be released 9 p.m. Sunday.
