Eagle shoutout

Posted

There is currently one of the worst Avian Flu outbreaks ever, and it’s killing bald eagles all across the country. If you see an eagle on the ground, and you can get closer than 200 feet to it and it doesn’t fly away, that is a sure sign the eagle has something wrong with it. If you get closer than 50 feet and it still doesn’t fly away then it is certain that it is sick or injured and needs help immediately. Please call OWL Raptor Center 604/946-3171.

OWL will call us here in Point Roberts at Eagle SkyeNet and we will investigate and determine if a rescue is required. After you call, it’s important to stay with the eagle, but keep 80-100 feet away and don’t face the eagle so it can relax, until we get there to assess the situation.

The H5N1 virus has been killing most eagles within 24 hours, but the eagle we rescued in Point Roberts on May 2 is still alive and fighting to recover. We can’t be sure about what’s wrong with eagles until the veterinarian examines them. The sooner the eagle is rescued, the greater its chance of recovery, so don’t hesitate to call, and don’t worry about if it’s Injured or not, it’s better to be safe and get on top of the situation.

You can follow our work, monitoring reports, videos and pictures at EagleSkyenet.com or Eagle SkyeNet on FB.
