The Editor:

The spirit of giving visited Point Roberts this holiday season. As in the past, the Point Roberts Volunteer Firefighters Association conducted a boot drive to benefit the Point Roberts Food Bank. Everyone has probably heard the news by now: approximately $1,000 – a record amount collected on the first day of the boot drive – was stolen. As soon as word spread of this outrage, we saw an incredible community response develop. Umpqua Bank pledged $1,000 to replace the stolen funds. Current and past fire district members donated generous replacement sums. The firefighters association increased the number of boot collection events and donated an additional $1,000 from our association funds. Additional donations, in cash and checks, small and large, poured in from Point Roberts businesses, residents and visitors – people of all ages and walks of life.

Stealing money raised for the Food Bank was a lowly, despicable act, and could have been a depressing and demoralizing one. But through the gracious actions of the Point Roberts community, our hearts are warmed and our resolve strengthened.

As a result of the incredible outpouring of support from all those who have donated and continue to donate, the Food Bank will hopefully have the funds and food to do more than ever before for those who need it most. No words can sum up our feelings of gratitude. Thank you, Point Roberts, for all that you have done.

Fadi

On behalf of the Point Roberts Volunteer Firefighters Association
