Volunteers needed to clean up Baker Field

Parks district commissioner Doug Shier is looking for volunteers to help get Baker Field in shape for July 4.

“I’m expecting and hoping to have everything ready for a softball tournament on the Fourth,” Shier said. “The first priority is to get grass growing.”

Shier is hoping to get final approval of plans and expenditures when the parks district commissioners meet on April 13.

Improvements will start with the renovation of the south baseball diamond. Working with Point Roberts Golf and Country Club superintendent Rick Hoole, Shier said they have a plan to level the field with truckloads of sand and reseed it. “We will definitely need some help with raking and clearing up,” he said. Along the first base side the brush will be cut back and debris piles removed from around the field. “Let’s clean it up and make it look nice,” he said.

Extending fencing, installing dugouts and repairs to the bathrooms are also planned, and a blank wall is still available for a mural. “I sure hope by the summer we can find an artist to paint the other side and make it nice,” Shier said. The parks district will pay for supplies.

Interested volunteers can contact Shier at 945-0366 or attend the next parks district meeting Monday, April 13 at 7 p.m. at the Gulf Road community center.
