The Point Roberts Taxpayers Association (PRTA) meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the community center to discuss local issues and concerns, hear guest speakers, and meet with local officials.
Everyone is welcome to participate in these meetings and to help make Point Roberts a great place in which to live, work, invest or visit. The association seeks to promote appropriate economic development and job creation while preserving the social and environmental qualities that make the Point so attractive to residents and visitors.
In 2017, we continued to play an active role on the Point Roberts Community Advisory Committee (PRCAC) and the ad hoc Point Roberts Border Committee. On PRCAC, we supported adoption of by-laws and offered recommendations for revision and merging of the Character Plan and WCC 20.72.
We offered recommendations for use of “gas tax” revenues collected by the Point Roberts Transportation Benefit District. On the Border Committee, we assisted in the renewal of the USDA’s special Point Roberts exemption, which allows importation of Canadian firewood, and we produced and distributed “Border Crossing Tips,” aimed especially at assisting Canadian visitors to navigate the border crossing as comfortably as possible.
The Association endorsed the new Park and Recreation District levy (2018-2023), which the voters approved in November. We were gratified by the commencement of construction of the new Point Roberts Library, which PRTA has supported since the inception of that project. Aside from providing the community with a better library facility, it will contribute to an improved esthetic landscape in the Gulf Road business core.
Our keynote speaker at the AGM, on July 13, 2017, was Washington State Senator Doug Ericksen, whose remarks and presence generated lively discussion of climate change, the environment and taxes.
