Ideas for this year’s Fourth of July in Point Roberts are coming from a group of community-based volunteers who want to create a special, grass roots event, by and for the community.
While the July 4 parade has traditionally been sponsored by the chamber of commerce with other groups sponsoring the pancake breakfast and other events, last year’s events were cancelled due to COVID 19 and a group of volunteers stepped into the breach.
“There’s a group of us and we call ourselves the Point Roberts Housewives,” said Allison Calder. “Last year we put on a car parade so we at least had something.”
By January 2021 they were already working on this year, according to group member and organizer Dee Gough. “We have a really nice group of volunteers and we have a number of events on the drawing board,” including a parade that will fit in with whatever restrictions end up being in place by July.
Calder said she had been in touch with several local groups who had offered to help with plans as they develop.
