Book and Author Fest

The 2016 Point Roberts Book and Author Festival will feature 10 authors from both sides of the border who will be on hand to talk about their books and autograph copies.

“It’s quite a mix,” said local author and event organizer Barbara Wayland. Genres include murder mysteries, political commentary, young adult fiction, travel, history and literary fiction.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Point Roberts Library who will provide refreshments, the event runs from 2 to 5 p.m. and will feature readings and presentations by authors.

Dry conditions and summer weather call for burn restrictions

Due to the warm weather conditions ahead and low fuel moisture levels, the Whatcom County Fire Marshal’s Office enacted restrictions on all open burning in unincorporated Whatcom County that went into effect on July 26.

All land clearing and yard debris burning is prohibited.

Recreational fires are still allowed in designated campgrounds and on improved properties with the landowner’s permission. Recreational fires are fires that are less than 3 feet in diameter, burning only seasoned firewood or charcoal, and are built in an approved fire enclosure.

Violations of these burn restrictions can result in a minimum $250 fine. In addition, if you have an illegal fire that escapes or needs to be extinguished by the fire department, you may be held financially responsible for fire suppression costs, as well as criminally responsible.

Volunteers wanted

Point Roberts Circle of Care is looking for volunteers who would like to invest their time, energy and expertise in assisting Point Roberts residents when they need help due to illness or injury.

Volunteers would do simple, helpful tasks such as walking the dog, picking up a prescription, preparing a meal or reading aloud, which can help someone stay in their home.
