Around the Point May 2016

The Saturday Morning Market is getting ready for another season, this year moving into the shade on the east side of the community center.

The market kicks off on May 21, running from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. every Saturday until late August or early September, depending on the weather.

All vendors are welcome, said organizer Jessica McVey, and the space fee is $5. Food vendors must post a valid Whatcom County food permit.

This year Circle of Care will be joining the market, offering coffee and tea, iced sun-tea in warm weather, and freshly popped popcorn, as well as sharing information about how they can help elderly community members stay in their homes.

On the second Saturday of each month a boot sale will join the market, an opportunity to have a garage sale in your trunk or acquire a treasure someone else is ready to part with. For information, contact McVey after May 5 at 945-0409 or jessica@pointbob.net.

Dog owners have been surprised in recent weeks by requests for a copy of their dog’s current rabies certificate when they cross the border into the U.S.

“There has not been an increase or emphasis in enforcement of these policies,” said Kristin Maypole with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). “Officers are providing the information to travelers to ensure consistency across the board.”

A dog is subject to 30 days’ quarantine if the vaccination was performed less than 30 days before arrival. CBP states that the certificate must be in English, identify the animal and the date of administration and expiration of the vaccine, and be signed by a licensed veterinarian.
