This year, as with many Christian churches, Lutheran ELCA churches will be following Year A Lectionary guidelines and reading the Gospel of Matthew. Many find this the most compelling of the synoptic gospels.
One reason (among many) is the way Jesus’ Compassion for the Lost is conveyed. “Jesus’ heart for the hurting is on full display in Matthew. We see Him dining with tax collectors and reaching out to the marginalized.
The driving motivation behind Jesus’ miracles and messages is genuine care for those who are wandering like sheep without a shepherd.” (The Hub online) This gospel makes Jesus accessible in fresh ways, as we grow in our understandings, relate more to others, and to their authentic needs.
Many in our world and on Turtle Island, our continent, are falling on harder times, and being ignored or worse. Many, so many are trying to provide help through food banks and shelters while cities, towns, and businesses are providing more housing for those with lower incomes, looking to keep the homeless warm on cold nights, and working to be tolerant in ways that knit our peoples back together after our times of taking to slippery slopes.
There is so much more we can do, are doing and hope to do. Everyone who wants to make a difference for good is needed.
Join us at Trinity Lutheran Church on Sundays at 11 a.m., or for non-religious Jazz Vespers at 4 p.m. on fifth Sundays. Our schedule varies: Pastor Jean and Father Martin offer traditional communion services, Reverends Bev and Sydney offer interfaith services. Check the All Point Bulletin for more information.
