Like her mother and grandmother before her, Alyssa was raised on the Point an
d has noplans to leave right now. “I like it here because it’s such a beautiful place and the people are so nice,” she said.
Music was her passion during her high school years and will continue to be, she said. “I really enjoyed choir. It was the one thing I always loved,” she said. “I think there should be more opportunities for music education in Blaine schools.”
After graduation her main priority is to get a job, save some money and evaluate her options for the future.
Montanna Criss
“My family has always motivated me to keep going and I dedicate my success to my mother, my brother and my sister,” said Montanna following her graduation from Blaine High School.
Montanna came to the Point from Las Vegas, Nevada in 2015 and spent her last two years of high school in Blaine. “I thought I had more of an opportunity for a better education,” she said. She found the people on the Point friendly but the weather was a shock after living in the Nevada desert.
She is heading to Eastern Washington University to pursue medical studies and a BS in nursing. “A number of people in my family have been in the medical profession and I have always felt drawn to that and to the idea of helping others,” she said.
Isabella Nielson
From preschool through graduation, Isabella attended Southpointe Academy in Tsawwassen and loved the sense of community in the growing school. “You develop a great relationship with the teachers and all the people around you,” she said.
She enjoys a similar sense of a close community living in Point Roberts. “A lot of people complain about the border but I don’t mind it,” she said. “It’s like an entrance into its own little world.” She also valued the unique cross-border community she grew up in. “It’s something you don’t get anywhere else and it’s really special,” she said.
Isabella competed provincially as a swimmer and a dancer. “I grew up in the pool,” she said. She has completed Royal Academy of Dance exams in ballet up to advanced level 2. From a year spent in New Zealand with her family to a five-month homestay in Spain in 10th grade she has also traveled widely.
This fall she will head to the University of Washington to pursue a major in Community, Environment and Urban Planning.
Grace Wilkowski
Grace will be heading to Washington State University this fall to pursue a degree in nursing with a minor in psychology. “My passion for wanting to help others really inspired me,” she said. “I am meant to be a nurse.”
Having attended Blaine schools since second grade, Grace said she was pleased with the education she received. “I felt the teachers really cared about students,” she said, adding that the influences of teachers had made her a well-rounded person. She was active in band and associated student body during high school.
Taking advantage of the Running Start program through Whatcom Community College, “put me almost two years ahead,” she said as she prepares to head off to
college.
Growing up on the Point, Grace said she felt nurtured yet exposed to real diversity. “I wouldn’t be the person I am today without Point Roberts,” she said. “There’s nothing like it.”
