The new salt company on the Point, 2 Salty Blondes, has been making waves in local news lately with big plans ahead and a solid flagship line of salt blends available now.
2 Salty Blondes is pushing forward, expecting to drop new products in the coming months and push into new markets in 2027. While much is on the horizon for the fledgling salt company, Tamra Hansen and Noni Johansson shared their story with the All Point Bulletin, showing us that sometimes all it takes is sharing an idea with a friend to start something new.
When asked how the idea to start making artisan salt blends came about, Johansson said, “Well, I kind of just said I have this idea for this jalapeno salt that I want to make for the margaritas at The Pier, and we were just on a walk down by Lily Point.” Hansen loved the idea and suggested selling the salt. Johansson said, “So then we made it, and people around the bar just really loved it. Then we started asking if people would buy it, and so we started our licensing process.”
Hansen and Johansson have been friends for about a year and a half, but Hansen said, “I feel like we've known each other our whole life.” Hansen continued to say, “It’s just so easy to work together.”
The salt is manufactured in Point Roberts, and that is an important part of the business for the team. Hansen said, “Point Roberts for years was all about manufacturing, right?” Hansen continued to say, “We want people to not think of Point Roberts as just a place to come for beauty, right? To actually want to bring back the artisan point of it.”
It is clear that the team takes great pride in their product. Johansson said, “It’s not just your typical salt. It's gonna add personality to your life!”
The currently available blends are Blonde Heat, Dirty Blonde, Blonde Mui and Brunching Blonde. That jalapeno salt idea that sparked the business is now known as Blonde Heat, which the website describes as bringing “bold, sassy heat to everything it touches.”
All of the salt blends can be found featured on the menu at The Pier Restaurant, and popcorn flavored with the salt blends is also available at The Pier, so the curious can get a taste of the salt flavors in action.
The salt blends themselves are available at The Pier Restaurant, Saltwater Cafe, and at the International Marketplace as well as online, but the business is growing. Johansson said, “I think our next immediate focus is expanding our wholesale footprint into boutique retail, specialty grocery stores, partner venues, while still growing our local loyal base of customers as well.”
The team has also signed up for trade shows and eventually plan to be selling at farmers markets. Their fall goal, though, is to focus on getting their products into more boutique shops.
New flavors are planned to be added quarterly and Hansen gave us a hint at the next upcoming flavor, revealing, “Our new flavor is going to be the blackberry salt.”
The flavors in the blends by 2 Salty Blondes are often inspired by the regional identity and flavors of Point Roberts. Hansen said that using blackberries was a “no brainer” since “this place is loaded with blackberries.”
Holiday blends are coming soon, and the team said two holiday salts are being developed. One will be sweet and one will be savory. The team hasn’t stopped with just salt either. Hansen said, “We also have a little clothing line that we started, which is Borderline Salty, so it's kind of on the same premise.”
As with many Point ventures, a sense of community comes through loud and clear. Hansen wants to utilize their website blog as a platform where people can share how they’re using the salt blends in their own cooking. Hansen said, “People are actually coming up with their own recipes now, and saying, ‘Hey, we tried it with this, and it really, you know, worked out well.’” She continued, adding, “So we want people to actually go online and share their stories and what they're using it for because they're experimenting.”
Speaking of the Point Roberts community, Johansson said, “They really have been very supportive, and they love things with ‘Point Roberts’ on it. They like to support the locals.”
Hansen and Johansson both hope that their business venture inspires other makers on the Point to create products they are passionate about. Hansen said, “hopefully it inspires other people in the community to produce stuff.”
New ventures and products are on the horizon and updates can be found at 2saltyblondes.com.
