The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office Auxiliary Communication Service will offer a five-week training course this fall for people interested in earning an FCC ham radio technician license.
Classes will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays, Oct. 5, 12, 19 and 26 and Nov. 2 at the Emergency Operations Center, 3888 Sound Way in Bellingham, with a Microsoft Teams option also available. The licensing test is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 14, at the EOC.
Students should obtain the ARRL Ham Radio License Manual, 6th Edition before the course begins.
Ham radio operators can provide communications when cell phone and internet systems fail and may assist during disasters and community events. Sheriff’s Office volunteers regularly practice emergency radio operations, conduct drills, prepare reports for incident command and state officials, and maintain equipment for deployment.
