Whatcom Humane Society (WHS), the county’s largest animal shelter, put out a call on social media for pet food donations on October 16, saying it desperately needed food for dogs and cats in the community.
The “pet food bank” program provides crucial nutrients to pets of low-income residents in Whatcom County and operates entirely on donations. On the morning of October 17, Paige España, fundraising and donor engagement manager at WHS, said the food bank shelves were nearly empty.
When the callout for donations coincided with an annual fundraiser with radio station and longtime partner KAFE 104.1, donations came pouring in, España said.
“It was so heartwarming to see folks arrive with carloads full of cat, dog and small animal supplies,” España told The Northern Light in an email. “We’re extremely grateful for this because we know the need is so overwhelming.”
España said food supplies donated leave as quickly as they arrive. Since demand is so high and the food bank is supplied only by donations, support surges like the past weekend are critical for keeping all those needy pets fed, España added.
KAFE 104.1’s Airwaves for Animals Radiothon raised over $56,000 for the animal shelter, with those funds going directly toward operation costs for WHS’s core missions of supporting over 5,000 animals every year. But donations for the food bank are always needed, España said.
