The National Retail Federation has recognized Ali Hayton of the International Marketplace as a part of their America’s Retail Champions program.
The program aims to recognize and celebrate “small business retailers who are exceptional advocates for retail and the communities they serve,” according to its website. Hayton was recognized among 50 small business owners who have gone above and beyond to support their customers and communities.
When asked about the award, Hayton wrote in an email to the All Point Bulletin, “It was incredibly humbling, and it meant so much to know that two Point Roberts residents took the time to nominate me for this award.
“To me, this recognition is really about advocating for our community and for independent grocery stores. I'm grateful that I was able to be a voice for both, especially during the pandemic and the challenging years that followed.”
Many businesses have struggled to succeed on the Point since the pandemic and some have even closed their doors, but not the International Marketplace. Hayton wrote, “People often ask how we've managed to keep the store open, and my answer is always, ‘How could we not?’ We have such an amazing community that we're proud to serve.”
Hayton went on to write, “It's a joy to see the summertime crowds return to Point Roberts each year, but what truly makes this place special is the incredible team at the Marketplace. They pour their hearts into this business every single day, and none of this would be possible without their dedication.”
