The Editor and the Point Roberts community:
Whether you are new here or you have lived here as long as I have, we can all agree on one thing, there has been a steady decline in our economy and also our recreational enjoyment of Point Roberts facilities. Not many have been able to stand the test of time. I am not okay with this and it upsets me to know that my home town has been dwindling away and not seeing any true growth or advancements that last more than a summer or two. The skate park was supposed to be one of those things that can’t be reduced to nothing, because it already is, at best, a space that is ever changing for the use of the riders who enjoy the space. Having the people in charge of our recreation decide that it is most appropriate to remove one thing to replace it with another, is depressing. Why on earth would we not all be fighting together to make the space larger and create something new? How is this growth? Why have we been reduced to taking from one group to make space for another group? It baffles me that we cannot all agree that the skate park has been a landmark in Point Roberts, and if anything, should be a blueprint for how to succeed in creating a space that is enjoyed for 20-plus years. The parks board commissioners have failed the community with this decision. Working toward the benefit of a few, instead of looking at the community at whole, and the history that goes with that.

U.S. federal border crossing entry data, Point Roberts, for May 2026:
Personal vehicles and passengers, 73,054. Previous month, 63,468.
The increase of 9,586 is welcome and I believe assisted by the activity of our Point Roberts Golf Course. We still have a ways to go to catch up to our pre-border lockdown numbers of May 2019 at 138,480.

My husband and I have been residents of Point Roberts for 30 years and have been patients of the local medical clinic since it opened. Under the management of Super Track Urgent Care, the clinic maintains the professionalism and standard of care one would expect from any quality medical office and we have been grateful for it.
Tim passed away this year after a 28-year journey with cancer and the many challenges that came with that diagnosis. Recently the clinic under Super Track Urgent Care was a source of support, allowing Tim to have blood draws and injected treatments here in Point Roberts rather than traveling elsewhere.
Earlier this year, following a two-week hospital stay in Bellingham, Tim saw Dr. Sean Bozorgzadeh for a follow-up visit. Dr. Sean quickly identified new symptoms and sent us to the emergency room accompanied by a letter he had written to the triage physician introducing Tim, summarizing his history and current symptoms. When the ER doctor read that letter he paused and said it was the first time he had ever received such a letter from the primary care physician. He found it enormously helpful and told me to show it to every doctor we encountered going forward. I did and every physician’s reaction was the same.
That letter was a small act but it made a profound difference and is exactly the kind of thoughtful and thorough care Dr. Bozorgzadeh brings to his patients. Point Roberts is fortunate to have him and Super Track Urgent care in our community.

After more than 10 years of dedicated service, the Board of Directors of the Point Roberts Dollars For Scholars organization has made the difficult decision to step down and end operations following the completion of this year's scholarship program.Serving our community and helping local students pursue their educational dreams has been an incredible privilege. We are extremely proud of what has been accomplished over the past decade. Through the generosity of our donors, sponsors, volunteers, and community members, we have awarded more than $200,000 in scholarships to Point Roberts students. We are especially proud that every dollar raised for scholarships has gone directly to the students, helping them continue their education at colleges, universities, trade schools, and other post-secondary programs.
The success of Point Roberts Dollars For Scholars has only been possible because of the unwavering support of our community. We extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who has donated, volunteered, attended fundraising events, and encouraged our students throughout the years.
While Scholarship America has extended our current Affiliation Agreement through Dec. 31, 2027, allowing chapters to continue operating under the current model while it develops its future direction, the continuation of Point Roberts Dollars For Scholars depends on a new group of volunteers stepping forward to serve as the Board of Directors.
At this time, there are no volunteer replacements committed to taking over the organization. Without a new board, the Point Roberts Dollars For Scholars will be concluded.
Finding no members of our community who are passionate about supporting local students willing to take over, we will be wrapping up the operation and donating the remaining funds to our local school community.
Thank you to everyone who has supported Point Roberts Dollars For Scholars over the years. It has been an honor to serve our community.

The Point Roberts Food Bank would like to share some great news with the community: We finally have permit approval to build a storage warehouse on our Teller property, and construction is planned for this summer!
The Food Bank began operations in 1978, and since then has been serving the community with the help of many dedicated volunteers and supporters, but has never had a permanent facility for food storage. This was a long-time dream of Henry Rosenthal, who served as Food Bank president from 2013 until his retirement in the summer of 2022 (he passed in November of that year). Over the years he was able to accumulate funds toward this goal, which enabled the new board of directors to purchase our Teller Road property in 2024.
The current board of directors has continued to collect funds, via donations and grants, so that we are able to proceed with the construction. However, costs have risen over the years, and we are still working to ensure we have enough to finish the project, as well as support on-going operations.
Accordingly, the Food Bank is selling raffle tickets for a beautiful quilt donated by the Point Roberts Quilters, with the draw to be held at a fundraising Spaghetti Dinner at the community center on Saturday, Aug. 22 from 5- 7 p.m.
(Please note – we had originally planned to have a chili cook-off on that date, but Whatcom County Health regulations make that impractical.)
For those who are unable to attend but would still like to help, donations may be mailed to P.O. Box 31 or made securely through PayPal on our website at prfoodbank.org.
Sincerely,
Dave Lee, president, Point Roberts Food Bank
