New teacher, familiar face

After more than three decades in the community, Tracy Kelly has returned to Point Roberts Primary School as its newest classroom teacher.

Kelly officially began teaching on Jan. 30, returning to the school where she first started as a paraeducator in 2014. After moving to Blaine schools in 2022, she applied to come back to Point Roberts when the position opened up.

Over the years, Kelly has become a familiar presence in the building. In addition to nearly a decade as a paraeducator, she completed two long-term substitute teaching assignments at the school. She went back to college in 2019 and earned her education degree along with a special education endorsement.

Kelly said she focuses on teaching “the whole child,” and enjoys watching them learn, grow and mature.

“I like to recognize where they’re at and teach where they’re at,” she said, emphasizing encouragement and helping students realize their capabilities.

She is looking to strengthen community involvement at the school. Plans include bringing volunteers back into classrooms, reconnecting with the local fire department for presentations, field trips to local spots and creating more opportunities for students to engage with the broader Point Roberts community.

Kelly encouraged those interested in volunteering to apply through the Blaine School District website. “The school would love to have anybody that would just like to come in and buddy read,” she said.

When she’s not teaching, Kelly enjoys spending time with her husband, adult children, and two dogs. She’s often seen walking her dogs at the marina or near her house.

“I’m happy to be given the opportunity to be here and serve the students and the families of Point Roberts,” Kelly said. “It’s a good place.”
