The Point Roberts Marketplace will implement a proposal from Sustainable Point Roberts to reward shoppers who bring their own bags with a donation to a local charity.

Starting in March, the store will donate 5 cents to Point Roberts Dollars for Scholars for every shopper who brings in a reusable bag for carrying their groceries.

Speaking to Whatcom County Council on February 25, Sustainable Point Roberts organizer Allison Calder said store owner Ali Haydon had committed to the program for an initial three months and that if it went well “every quarter she will select a new charity to support.”
