A ukulele group has been meeting in Point Roberts, gathering weekly to play and learn together. The club currently has about four regular members, though participation shifts week to week. It began simply at the library in early January and evolved as schedules changed and more players connected. The group remains informal and open to everyone.
The club includes a range of experience levels and musical strengths, from total beginners to more seasoned players. Members bring music they want to play and share songs, chord sheets and notes as they learn from one another. The atmosphere is supportive and patient, making it welcoming for newcomers. It is not as structured as a class, but instead it follows the Hawaiian tradition of kani kapila, an informal, communal music-making style where participants join in when ready and practice at home. As one member put it, “It’s for the love and fun of doing it.”
During the colder months they meet indoors, but the plan is to take their instruments to the beach when the weather permits. Players hope to eventually memorize their favorites and have even talked about performing live. “You gotta think big,” one member said.
With laughter and plenty of enthusiasm, the focus remains on making music together and enjoying the camaraderie. Anyone with a ukulele is welcome to join, and those without one can borrow one through the Whatcom County Library System’s “library of things.”
The ukulele group meets weekly at 6 p.m. on Wednesdays at the community center on Gulf Road.
