Year in Review: PAWS

Posted

The nights are dark and deep, but as the year closes, the light of gratitude is felt by members of the PAWS board for the continuing generosity of our donors. Those who love animals abound in this community and with your help, the past year has been marked by meaningful programs aimed at domestic and wild animals alike.

PAWS has worked with Eagle SkyeNet in attempts to circumvent the regulations which do not allow transport of injured or poisoned eagles to the state-of-the-art OWL Raptor medical/rehabilitation facility in Ladner. Birds must be transported by boat or plane to a facility south of Seattle. Many do not survive

Feral cat colonies in Point Roberts are another focus of the work PAWS and this year eight feral kittens have been spayed or neutered and placed in forever homes. Supporting feral colonies with food and providing veterinary care for ill or injured cats are also ways we help.

PAWS assists Point Roberts people who may benefit from financial help in caring for their pets. It takes a village, and is there a better village than ours?

We continue to advocate for the eradication of all rodenticides, which can work their way up the food chain with sad results. Other wild animals and birds are at risk, as well as domestic animals, when they feed on dead rodents.

Marine mammal rescue is of critical concern in our community surrounded by the sea. PAWS extends our great thanks to a remarkable team that helps transport injured mammals and birds to Bellingham and beyond for care. Chief Carlton helps coordinate rescues and pilot Jayson Biggins volunteers to fly animals out of Point Roberts. PAWS contributes by helping to pay for fuel.

Thank you also to those nameless heroes who champion animals in ways unseen. Like you, and all our donors, PAWS believe in the intrinsic value and rights of animals – for those in the wild and for those who rule the roost in our homes.
