Year in Review: Point Roberts Community Advisory Committee

Posted

Early in 2025, Point Roberts Community Advisory Committee (PRCAC) hosted town hall meetings to present and discuss the final Stormwater Drainage Management Plan, identifying 94 problem areas and outlined long-term infrastructure needs. The committee formally petitioned Whatcom County Council to adopt the plan, and helped answer community questions about culvert sizing, wetland mitigation, and potential funding mechanisms. Additionally, PRCAC worked with Whatcom County Health to continue to offer septic classes.

PRCAC also convened a town hall on Economic Development, partnering with the Port of Bellingham and consultants Maul Foster & Alongi, to explore strategies for resilience, infrastructure and local entrepreneurship. Community engagement was strong and ongoing, with PRCAC helping shape recommendations and raise awareness of funding and zoning constraints.

On behalf of the Department of Ecology, PRCAC promoted October water rights workshops, helping residents to fill out a court claim forms before May 1, 2026 in order to keep their legal right to use water and protect their property values.

We monitored and encouraged the removal of abandoned cable lines, particularly along Marine Drive. Bob Hillman, who acquired pole rights, announced his intent to provide both free and subscription internet to the Point in 2026.

Other advocacy included writing to Senator Sharon Shewmake in support of Whole Goal WA and their campaign for universal healthcare. PRCAC requested a related town hall here.

Persistent community concerns included the condition of the Seabright Beach stairs, Tyee Drive signage, and Maple Beach amenities. PRCAC addressed these with a mix of county coordination and community outreach.

We supported the Point Roberts Garden Club’s landscaping proposal using TBD funds and explored modest increases in fuel tax allocations to support infrastructure.

We are in process of recruiting one at-large PRCAC member, encouraging continued community involvement.

In 2026 we plan to hold a town hall on archeology with DAHP, Lummi Nation and Whatcom County PW Archeologist.
