Year in Review: Point Roberts Taxpayers Association

Posted

PRTA met almost monthly, via Zoom during the winter months and in the community center during the summer.  We aim to serve as an open public forum for discussion of community issues and, on county matters, to work through PRCAC to advance our views and recommendations. In addition to having a PRTA representative on PRCAC, currently two other board members happen to be at-large members of PRCAC.

During the past year, PRTA formally adopted a few policy positions, which were shared with PRCAC and the public:

1. Endorsed Whatcom County Library System levy lift ballot measure.

2. Committed to working on an information guide to help the public better understand the current status, timeline and details of various broadband programs under development.

3. Supports making logging permits subject to local review and restrictions.

4. Concurred with Point Roberts Chamber of Commerce in their call for Whatcom County to provide sanitation facilities, trash collection and additional parking at Maple Beach County Park.

5. Supports increasing the Point Roberts fuel excise tax from the current one cent per gallon to the statutory maximum of two cents per gallon. Supports using these funds to improve shoulders on main roads for increased pedestrian and cyclist safety.

6. Supports restoring a dock or pier facility at Lighthouse Marine Park.

We were honored to have Washington Lt. Gov. Denny Heck as keynote speaker at our AGM on July 10. He was accompanied by State Sen. Sharon Shewmake and Rep. Joe Timmons.

Despite positive indications from U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen’s staff, the congressman was unable to schedule a town hall meeting with his constituents in Point Roberts in 2025.

In September, PRTA and Kelly & Son Roofing conducted a litter collection on Gulf Road under the county’s adopt-a-road program.

The public is always welcome to join us at 7 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month. Meeting details are always published in the All Point Bulletin and shared on social media and by email.
