Still Waters

Psalm 23:1-2 “The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul.”

As we approach the end and beginning of years, we sparkle, pop, fuss and sing. A new year, like a fresh covering of snow, waits to be explored. Looking out over the water, we raise the sails, push out from shore, confident that the winds of our plans will take us forward.

What do we do when adverse waves come? How about the doldrums, when we sit like a lame duck going nowhere? Worse, boat failure or fights?

Some things are easily repaired; other things require waiting. However, at times, defeat comes, forcing us to call for help, a tow back to shore. What do we do with failure?

In the bible, Jesus and the disciples planned to cross the sea on what started out a clear day. Jesus rested, the boat gliding over calm waters. But a fierce storm rose up, and these experienced fishermen were overcome with fear, certain they would sink.

In panic, they woke Jesus up, saying, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” With calm authority, Jesus rebuked the wind and said waves, then their lack of faith.

As you prepare for a new year, perhaps you are confident. Perhaps you are trembling. Perhaps the storm continues, days piling into one another.

When storms or failures come, cry out to Jesus. He can call your faith forward and calm your heart. He loves you, sees you, and can walk on the water to you, saying, “Eyes up child.”

“Nothing is too great for His almighty power. Nothing is too small for His love.” - Corrie ten Boom.
