Covid-19 April 28 update

As of Tuesday, April 28, the Whatcom County Health Department is reporting 293 confirmed cases of Covid-19 to date in Whatcom County and 28 deaths. That's 13 new cases and one new death since the previous Tuesday, April 21.

In total, 2,626 residents in Whatcom County have been tested for the new coronavirus, making the rate of positive tests in Whatcom County 11.2 percent. That's higher than the statewide rate of positive tests, which is 7.6 percent, according to the Washington State Department of Health.

Whatcom County has a higher rate of positive tests despite testing a smaller percentage of citizens than the state as a whole. In Whatcom County, 1.2 percent of the population has been tested, according to a calculation made with county health department numbers and the U.S. Census Bureau's 2019 population estimate. That's about half the statewide testing rate of 2.4 percent, calculated with state department of health testing numbers and the census bureau's 2019 population estimate.

Statewide, 13,686 have tested positive for the virus and 765 have died, according to the state department of health's April 27 numbers. In the U.S., more than 980,000 have tested positive for the virus and 55,258 with the virus have died, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As of April 27, there were 1,998 people in B.C, who had tested positive, and 103 had died, according to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control.
