The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is working to clean up the environment by getting unused boats out of local waters this summer.
DNR’s Vessel Turn-In Program is offering free disposal of vessels to boaters who can’t otherwise afford to remove their vessel. The program was designed to prevent vessels from becoming derelict or abandoned, which can leak toxic chemicals into the water.
Vessel turn-in applications, which need to be notarized, are due Tuesday, July 1. There is a limited number of spots, and vessels will be accepted by the order they are received and accepted.
Only Washington residents are able to apply. Along with the application, vessel photos, and proof of ownership or legal authority to get rid of the vessel should be emailed to dvrp@dnr.wa.gov and tammy.robbins@dnr.wa.gov with “Whatcom Vessel Turn-In Event” in the subject line.
People who own boats that are 34 feet or less in length will be accepted to the Port of Bellingham return. However, DNR still encourages owners of vessels larger than 34 feet to apply to the program.
According to the DNR, a 15- to 20-foot vessel costs on average $2,500 to discard and a 31- to 35-foot vessel costs on average $9,000 to discard.
Most of the boat’s parts will be recycled through the program.
