Expect a survey from the parks department

The Point Roberts parks district is preparing to post an online survey to get community feedback for this year’s summer kids’ camp. The district typically holds an annual kids’ camp but was forced to cancel it in 2020 due to the pandemic. As long as conditions continue to allow, the district hopes to offer a camp that would start mid-July and extend into August.

Speaking at the parks district commissioner meeting on April 12, chair Bennett Blaustein said he was hoping to hire about six counselors in order to have a ratio of one counselor to five or six kids. Depending upon whether it was a four- or five-day camp, the cost of the program would be between $8,000 and $10,000. Under current Phase 3 guidelines, as long as social distancing and other rules are followed, kids’ camps are allowed.

The parks district is also gearing up for the summer kayak program and plans to retrieve the kayaks from storage to place them at Lighthouse Marine Park for users. They should be transferred by the end of April, according to Ina Carare, the district’s program coordinator.

Currently, there are no plans to open up the community center for senior lunches as no state guidance has yet been released. Blaustein said he wouldn’t expect to see such guidance until Phase 4 is reached. “Many senior centers won’t open up for indoor dining until the governor cancels the emergency Covid-19 order and that’s way down the road,” he said. Currently, senior lunches are provided on a drive-through basis with 80-125 people showing up regularly. Previously, around 45 people showed up for in-person lunches.
